In
line-ahead formation, the British forward van column led by Nelson's VICTORY
approach the combined French-Spanish fleet in what appears will culminate in a
standard broadside to broadside battle.
At at critical moment Nelson
gives orders to port the helm, this sudden swing to starboard heads the VICTORY
into a gap between the French ship 'BUCENTAURE' and REDOUBTABLE.
While
VICTORY had not fired a single shot until this point, she had received heavy
damage from the French ships.
Slowly the VICTORY approaches the stern of
the BUCENTAURE, VICTORY'S well trained gun crews had been waiting patiently for
this moment. On Nelson's command, with a deafening roar, VICTORY'S forward
mounted corronades blasted 68lb shot through the stern windows of the French
ship, followed by perfectly timed continuous, devastating double and treble
shotted broad sides into the BUCENTAURE'S hull.
This is the moment of
action depicted in my painting 'Breaking The Line'. The second painting in my
Trafalgar trilogy.
