VICTORY, having broken through the enemy line, and with Nelson
mortally wounded below decks, the fighting raged against the French ship
BUCENTAURE on her port side, and REDOUTABLE ranged up to her
starboard.
In peril of being overpowered and boared, the
TÉMERAIRÉ now joined the mêllee, four ships locked in
combat, REDOUBTABLE'S mizzen mast is shot away, crashing onto
TÉMERAIRÉ'S quarter deck.
Elsewhere, the great Spanish
SANTISSIMA TRINIDAD, alreadly masively damaged, receives broadsides from the
British NEPTUNE.
Collingwood, who had led the rear column in the ROYAL
SOVEREIGN engages the de-masted Spanish SANTA ANA.
However, convinced of
ultimate defeat, men and officers of the Combined Fleet fought on with
determination, but within five hours the bloody battle was
over.
POSTSCRIPT
On the evening of Oct. 21st. 1805, storms swept
the scene of destruction. Despite the gallent efforts of the crews from both
sides, joined now in the fight against gale driven seas, over a thousand more
seamen perished.
